ABA History

The Auckland Badminton
Association was formed in 1930. The sport enjoyed steady
growth and by the 1960's badminton in the region
had reached such a size that the Counties, Waitemata
(now Waitakere) and finally North Shore (now North
Harbour) associations were founded.
Despite administering
only half its original area, Auckland is by far
the largest badminton centre in New Zealand with more
than 20% of all affiliated players. There are currently
15 Senior, 8 Ladies and 7 Junior Clubs making up the
Auckland Badminton Association.
The Association is fortunate that its member
clubs play at a number of purpose built badminton
facilities. College Rifles, Otahuhu, Lloyd Elsmore play
in halls that are used almost exclusively for badminton
with the Otahuhu and College Rifles Clubs owning their
own halls. Lynndale is part owner of a five court hall
that is shared with indoor bowls and provides excellent
playing conditions. The other clubs play in school halls
or council gymnasiums.
