History of North Islands

(Main Menu)

U15s - As you can see below this is the first time at least going back to 1984 that Auckland has had 3 teams finish in the top 4 in addition our 4th team finished 6th.

U17s - In the U17s this was our best results since 1994 with 2 teams in the top 4 and the 2nd team just missing out on qualifying for Nationals against a good Waikato team.

Thanks to Bob Lindberg from Badminton NZ for the information below

Latest News from Palmy

Updates of Major Results)

(Main Menu)

    Sat July 3rd - 99 Gillies Ave

It is early morning - before 7:30am as the first vans drive into Gillies Ave the condensation on the windows are a reminder of the chill of the new morning.  But the day is fine and as the sun rises revealing blue sky the promise of adventure and excitement fills the air.  Gradually more and more vans and cars file into the carpark and soon it is packed with players, coaches, managers, bags, parents.

9 teams, over 100 people and tons of enthusiasm huddle round in groups to either compare notes on the trip, catch up with goss, try to get warm  or hustle to make sure everything is sorted.  These are the best of all the players in the Auckland Badminton Association Boundary for their age and they are embarking on a trip that only a few ever get to make - to experience that rare mix of passion, emotion and competition that makes the North Island champs so special.  The Palmy trip has started as they join hundreds of other U15 and U17 reps converging on the city of Palmerston North in prep for the start of tomorrow's competition

Sun July 4th - Palmerston North - Arena Manawatu
Reports were that the weather was not too cold and the Auckland teams had a great day. The U15s were unbeaten with Auckland 4 winning a close 9-7 battle with Manawatu, a good win for this young team.   3 of the Auckland teams made the 1st Division.  This Division has 9 teams and consists of 2 sections.  In the U17s Auckland 2 had a key game against Hutt Valley winning 8 all on countback and Auckland 3 had a close win over Wellington 9-7.  This was very tough on the Hutt Valley team in particular who were performing well in their box.  For Auckland 2 and 3 it was great to win such close matches meaning that they now progress into the top division for the next round.  Auckland now have 3 U17 teams that have made the 1st Division which is a great opportunity for those players.

    Mon July 5th
What a day of intense matches today as the tournament gets to the business end in each of the Age groups.  Auckland 1 and 2 in the 15s are heading their group.  They will be playing off against two teams at the top of Division1 Section B to see which 3 teams go to Nationals. U17s:  The top Auckland team is topping their box.  The 2nd team had a close match against Pop n Good Popcorn Waikato which Waikato won 9-7.  So U17s Auckland 2 will need to beat North Harbour 2 to qualify for Nationals and hope Waikato do not beat them.  North Harbour are a good side but anything is possible :-) so we wish the team well and hope that they give it a good crack.  Team 4 had a good win over Manawatu and while Auckland 5 has had some tough games they will be learning a lot and had a close match against North Harbour 2.   U15s.  A special mention for Auckland 3 - although some results are to come in it is clear they will finish 3rd in Division 1 section one and they have only lost to Auckland 1 and 2 so far which is a really great performance.  Auckland 1 and 2 will finish in the top 2 and now play off against 2 teams at the top of Section B for the 3 spots at Nationals.  Auckland 4 is a very young team but has been doing exceptionally well and has finished at the top of it's box in Division 2 and now play Hutt Valley in their next game.  A tribute hear to all the hard work being done by the coaches, managers, parents of all the teams from Auckland, and other associations as well as all the work done by Badminton NZ and Badminton Manawatu - there is a huge workload that goes into this event and alot of people working very hard to make it a success and year after year create a very special event.

    Tues July 6th
The finalists for each age group were sorted out today with Auckland playing North Harbour at the top of the U15s and U17s.  In the 15s the teams did really well and Auckland 2 also plays off against Waitakere for the 3rd spot at Nationals to be held at Auckland later this year October 2nd to 8th.  Special mention to Auckland 4, a very young team that finished 2nd in Division 2 and to Auckland 3 who had some tough games in the top box but had soms great results.  In the U17s Auckland 6 had their first win YUSS :-)  Team 4 have lost only 2 matches, one to finalists North Harbour and a close game 7-9 to Wellington and team 2 and 3 had a tough time in Division 1 with team 2 coming close to qualifying for Nats with a 7-9 loss to Waikato.  Hopefully everyone gets behind the teams today and cheers like crazy :-).  For many in the U17s from associations all over the North Island this will be their last team event day at Palmerston, hope you enjoy it.

    Weds July 7th
Huge congratulations to the Auckland teams.  Auckland U15 1 and U17 1 for winning the North Island teams title.  It was close for a while in the U15 during the middle stages against North Harbour.  U15 - Auckland 2 did really well qualifying for Nationals and will be keen to keep improving between now and them.  Congrats to the coaches U15 1 Barry Stevens, U17 1 Xu Li, U15 2 Charles Simms and the managers U17 1 Annie So, U15 1 Keith McLeod U15 2 May Tang (Robert Hillier for derbys).  In the rest of the 15s Auckland 3 and 4 performed well and Auckland 4 finished 2nd in the 2nd Division, a great result for a young team.  In the 17s 17s 2 and 3 finished 4 and 5 in division 1.  In division 2 Ak 17s 4 had some close results finishing 3rd and Auckland 5 jumped 1 place up the table to 4th in Division 3.  Spare a thought for Hutt Valley's U17 team.  Who but for a close 8-8 loss against Ak U17 2 could have been in the 1st Division box and were easily the top team in Division 2.

The individuals got underway with some close games.  Plenty of games to go yet and lost of good matches to unfold.

    Thurs July 8th
A full on day of games at Palmy and a very successful one for the Auckland players.  In many of the main round semis in both age groups there are Aucklanders in 3 of the 4 semis in some cases in all of the semis.  There will be some fantastic games tomorrow and there are sure to be a charged and exciting atmosphere.  Usually everyone gathers around in the stands to watch the key games and all the finals of the plates and main round are played together so that the audience can watch a range of games all at once with heaps of cheering.

Woah one of our best ever years at Palmerston North with 9 of the ten titles and 23 of the 30 possible titles including plates etc as well as the team wins and Auckland U15 2 qualifying for Nats.  For full results see the main menu and summary tables on this page. Special mention to Angie Leung and Lilian Shih who completed triple crowns - winning all 3 events.

All the teams arrived home today at varying times after a fantastic trip. Now it's time to plan and get ready for next year so that we make it even better and more affordable for everyone as well by getting the Auckland costs down.  A big thank you and congratulations to Badminton NZ and Badminton Manawatu for putting together an awesome event yet again and creating something which helps create special memories for all those involved.  Thanks to, to all the coaches, parents, managers and players, hope you get a chance to rest up this week and recover and enjoy thinking back on the time spent at Palmy this year.
