History of North Islands

(Main Menu)

U15s - As you can see below this is the first time at least going back to 1984 that Auckland has had 3 teams finish in the top 4 in addition our 4th team finished 6th.

U17s - In the U17s this was our best results since 1994 with 2 teams in the top 4 and the 2nd team just missing out on qualifying for Nationals against a good Waikato team.

Latest News from Palmy

(Main Menu)

Day Five - Friday July 10th - Auckland In 7 out of 10 titles
In an historic end to an historic week there were plenty of blue shirts on the victory dais. In the U15s Lilian Shih completed a rare triple (winning all 3 the singles, doubles and mixed) and Angie Leung the doubles.  In the U17s Victoria showed alot of courage and talent with a fantastic triple in the U17s and Jason Leung picked up the mixed and doubles titles.  There were also plenty of Aucklanders in the plate winners - click here for the full table.
Now the players can relax and reflect on a week of phenomenal results in which every Auckland team and players played a part in making history here
Day Five - Thursday July 9th - Individuals Advance To Semis
All games were played up to the semifinal stages today with  the semis and finals to be held tomorrow.  Tomorrow for some it will be their last day at Palmerston as they will be too old to play next year - spare a thought for them.
U15s - Unseeded Aucklander Daniel Lee is having a a great tournament and showing his talent making the semi finals of the boys singles.  The girls singles is an Auckland / Oz fest with Joy Lai (Australia),and 3 Aucklanders Sabrina Fu, Lilian Shih and Angie Leung in the semis.  Matthew Chan is flying the flag for Auckland with partner Xavier Choi from Waitakere in the boys doubles they are 3/4 seeds.  Girls Doubles Angie and Lilian, Kaitlyn McLeod (Ak) with partner Rayna Phillips (NH), Rowena Devatahasan and Mary Jiang (Ak) are in the semis as are dark horses Natasha David and Gronya Somerville both from Australia.  Angie and Lilian are in the Mixed with their North Harbour partners Dylan Soedjasa and Kerwyn Lee, as are Auckland pair of Shao Yu Tang and Rowena Devathasan.
U17s - The boys singles is true to seeding with Riga Oud and Jason Leung making the semis these will be tough and excellent matches and could be one of the highlights of the tournament.  Aucklanders Victoria Cheng and Carmen Yuen are through to the semis, all semis are tough but keep an eye on the  match between Carmen Yuen and Melissa Yin from North Harbour.  5 Aucklanders make the boys doubles semis Riga Oud / Michael Zhang, Jason Leung (with North Harbour partner Evan Lee), and Eric Sow and Benny Suen.  In the girls doubles Victoria Cheng partners Anona Pak from North Harbour.  The mixed Doubles sees at least one Aucklander in every semi pair, Jason Leung and Victoria Cheng, Michael Zhang (with Anona Pak NH), Riga Oud (with Maxie Ou Yang Manawatu), and Benny Suen and Gabrielle Ip.
Day Four - Wednesday July 8th - Auckland 15s 1 Win North Island Teams
Individuals Start TodayMost of the results went to form in both the 15s and 17s Mixed Doubles.  There was a good result for Aucklander Daniel Lee (U15s Team 1) and Natasha David (Australia) beating 5/8 and 9/16 seeds on the way to the quarters.

U15s - Congratulations to the Auckland U15s 1 team with coach Barry Stevens, Manager Annie So, the player and parent help for doing a great job at Palmy.  In one of the best ever years for Auckland teams.  Auckland 2 also qualified for Nationals (well done to coach Charles Simms, manager Jeffery Vong, the players and parents who helped.  (Auckland teams finished 1st, 3rd, 4th and 6th).  In one of the matches of the day Auckland 1 took on North Harbour while Auckland 2 played Auckland 3 winning 13-3 to qualify for Nats.

Day Three - Tuesday July 7th - Auckland 17s 1 Win North Islands Teams Event

For the U17s it was effectively finals day and for the U15s there were key matches to determine final play off positions.

U15s - History was made today as 2 Auckland teams are guaranteed to make the Nationals as Auckland 2 and 3 play off for one spot and Auckland 1 play Harbour for 1st and 2nd.   Auckland 4 had a good win today against Manwatu 14-2 with some good 3 set wins and great experience for the team.  The team did well making the top division in one of the best years for all the Auckland 15s teams on record at Palmy.

U17s - Auckland 1 won the North Islands today with a great win against North Harbour 10-6 - see Match # 2 below while Auckland 2 lost in a tough tussle with Waikato by the same margin 6-10.  Congratulations to the Auckland 1 team for winning the U17s team event and for qualifying for Nationals along with North Harbour and Waikato.  In the Auckland Harbour match there were some key turning points - the 3 game win to Carmen Yuen and Charlotte Rashleigh wining 24-22 in the third set and again in the singles Carmen vs Anona Pak 24-22 in the third.  This shows how close this tie was and how much work both teams will be putting in between now and Nationals   But now is a time for celebration and congratulations to a very talented well coached and well managed Auckland side.  Auckland is very proud of the players, Coach Xu Li, Manager Sherilyn Bright, and parent help

Day Two - Monday July 6th
It was crunch time for the teams as they played key group matches today.
U15s - There were good wins today for Auckland 1,2 and 3.  (Auckland 2 played Auckland 4) Auckland 3 again stood out today with a great win over the top Waitakere side.  With one match to play Auckland were 8-7 ahead so everyone was doing countbacks to check on the number of games won.  Auckland lost the last match in two close sets.  So it was 8 matches all and down to who had won the  most games which Auckland won 20 games to 19.   The ability to win games even if losing the match was crucial to winning the tie. ( 3 game matches highlighted below (see match #1 list below).  In a situation unusual at Palmy both Wellington and Auckland 3 then had to play their next match almost straight away - with Auckland 3 winning  that  12-4.
U17s - Auckland  2 had a key match against Counties Manukau 1 today.   This was a key match in that is ensures Auckland 2 go through to the Division 1 play offs to join Auckland 1 and a chance to qualify for Nationals.  There is still alot of badminton to be played and they will have to take each game one at a time but this was a great step for the Auckland 2 team. (see match #2 below). Key clashes on Tuesday include Auckland 1 vs North Harbour and Auckland 2 vs Waikato
