Badminton is fun and fast and easy to play and caters to all levels of ability but at the high end is one of the most dynamic and athletic sports around.  The record for the smash in international badminton is 332 km / hr.

The Basics,

Badminton is a pretty simple game.  You serve diagonally opposite to your opponent.  The aim is to get the shuttle on the ground on your opponent's side of the net within the court boundary or to make them make a mistake.

How you can get a point.

1. The shuttle lands in the court on your opponent's side of the net

2. Your opponent hits it out

3. Your opponents  hits it into the net

4. Your opponent hits the net with their racket

5. The shuttle hits your opponents body

6. If the shuttle is hit more than one time by your opponent before it goes over the net

Serving - the server starts on the right hand side and serves diagonally.  You can serve into any part of the shaded blue area which is long and thin.

Once served the shuttle can be hit into any part of the blue court except the red areas shown in figure 2

If serving and you win a point you then serve the next one from the other side of your half of the court. e.g. if you serve 1st on the right hand side and win you serve the next one from the left hand side.

If you lose the serve your opponent starts serving.

Knowing where to Stand to start serving.

If your score is even - e.g. 0,2,4,6, etc you serve on the right hand side of the court. If you score is odd you serve on the left hand side.

(back to basics)

Serving - the serving starts on the right hand side and serves diagonally.  You have a short and wide area you have to serve into as shown in  Figure 2 below.

Once served the shuttle can be hit anywhere on the full court as shown in figure 4

If you win the point the person who served last switches side with their partner (e.g. if served from the right hand side they now serve from the left hand side) and serves again.

If you lose the serve your opponent starts serving.

Knowing where to stand to start serving.

If your score is even, 0,2,4,6 etc then the person on the right hand side of the court serves.  If your score is odd then the person on the left hand side serves.

 Getting Coached

Main / Rules / Play / Coach / Start Up / Video

Auckland has a range of excellent coaches for you to choose from.  Call us on 09-524-0872 and we will put you in touch with a coach to suit you.

Clubs: Almost every junior club has coaches at the club and all school holiday programs have coaches - some senior clubs have coaching.

Casual Coaching: This varies a lot depending on what you need.  One on one coaching ranges from usually around $35 per hour up to $45 per hour which includes shuttles and court hire.  Group coaching works out cheaper per person if you can get a small group together.

Assessing a Coach: When getting coaching always be wary of what you are looking for.  For example if you want coaching make sure that is what you get - i.e. not just someone who is going to feed you shuttles for an hour.  The coach should be giving you tips and suggestions to help you improve.  It's important to take accountability for your coaching and follow guidance but if you are still not improving consider changing coaches rather than blaming yourself.

Seniors are typically 17 to 35, Masters 40 plus, Vets 50 plus, Super Vets 60 plus.

For juniors there is a local derby inter association competition plus the fantastic U15 / U17 Palmerston North - North Island champs one of the best junior competitions in Australasia.  Auckland usually sends up to 8 rep teams to this event.   Top players may also be selected for regional teams going to the Australasian June Bevan U17 and CP Maddern U19 championships.
